Moosomin Jr B Steehawks, Meet the Town of Moosomin

Something that has been months and months or even years in the works finally came to fruition a couple of weekends ago as Moosomin has been accepted into the Praire Junior Hockey League and will fly by the name "Steelhawks". It has been over 50 years since Moosomin iced a Junior B team. That squad was uber talented and I expect, while it may take a season or two, the Steelhawks will become a force as well. Welcome to Moosomin!

Local Questions Regarding the Steelhawks

On behalf of the Town of Moosomin and our Parks and Rec Department we are extremely excited to welcome the Moosomin Steelhawks to our community and arena. This has been several years in the making as the Prairie Junior Hockey League has looked to add a 6th franchise into the South Division of the PJHL for several years. Over that time Moosomin has often been expressed as the desired destination. Parks and Rec have spent several months addressing any issues and concerns with all parties to make sure the steelhawks arrival is a welcome one. Moosomin was  Jr B powerhouse back in the 70's so this is not something new to the community. We have discussed the Steelhawks arrival at length with both the Senior Rangers and Minor Hockey. Both have been fully versed in our arena plan and are on board and excited to welcome the Steelhawks to Moosomin. While we did not seek out our Skating Club their ice times will not be effected in any way. With the Steelhawks arrival we have had some questions from the public which I would like to take this opportunity to address. If further questions arise by all means I encourage you to phone me at 435-7578 or email msmn.rec.brd@sasktel.net.

How will the Steelhawks be funded?
The Steelhawks are a privately owned and operated franchise. They were required to give the PJHL a detailed budget and a sizable bond to be accepted into the PJHL. Any expenses will be covered by their owner and all operations will fall on their private ownership.

How will this affect local ice time?
With regards to Practice ice the Steelhawks and Parks and Rec have had an agreement in place for some months where, like SJHL teams,  all Steelhawk practice times will be held during the day hours when school is on. Those familiar with our rink will know those times are not used by other formal users.  In addition we will continue to run the same Parents and Tots / Noon hour shinny we have for the last several years so no changes what so ever will occur due to practice times. With regards to gametimes the Steelhawks will have around a 40-game schedule spread out over 25 weekends. Gametimes are at 8pm. They have a June scheduling meeting which will allow us easily fill in their 20 home games and still have room for our U18 , U15 and Senior Rangers Hockey Teams. Our extreme demands on ice arise mid days on Weekends vs the 8pm slot which often will sit empty. In 2024/2025 we had 32 – 8pm slots open / not used during the PJHL regular season schedule.

Will this affect Minor Hockey in any other way?
Moosomin Parks and Recreation are tasked with the expectation that 75 % of expenses at the MS Arena will be created through users / sponsorship. As expenses continue to soar the only avenues for Parks and Rec to hit that goal is to increase revenue. With regards to increasing revenue the two options include increasing present users’ fees or create new revenue. Minor Hockey and our Skating Club book 85% of use at the MS Arena so when fees go up they would feel the hardest  pinch. The Steelhawks will be new revenue for the rink while have a minimum impact on ice time. As such their arrival will play a large role in helping keep Minor Sports rates as low as possible.

Opportunities for local players
Our Big Six Rangers squad has been a difficult squad for our graduating U18 players over the past several years. Same goes for players in communities around Moosomin The Steelhawks will afford an opportunity for our 18,19,20 and 21 Regional Hockey players to continue their competitive career while honing their skills. Some of these Jr B players will go on to Jr A careers and some will go onto Senior Hockey careers. What is definitive is that the Steelhawks will provide these 18-21 players with another avenue to continue playing the game they love in and around Moosomin.

Economic Benefits to the Community
The PJHL consists of Carrot River , Martensville , Fort Knox , Pilot Butte , Prince Albert , Regina Capitals , Regina Silver Foxes , Saskatoon Quakers , Saskatoon Royals , Saskatoon Westleys , Saskatoon Rebels, and Southern Rebels. These teams will all arrive in town with many using Moosomin as the overnight stop staying at Moosomin Hotels and eating at Moosomin restaurants. Over the course of the winter this will play a significant role in economic spin off for the community.
In addition we expect fans from across the Region to attend games which again creates revenue at our restaurants, our gas stations and our down town core!!
All said the Steelhawks will become a great source of revenue for many local business owners in Moosomin.

Entertainment value to the Region
Clearly Moosomin and our Region is a hockey hub. We encourage fans to give the Steelhawks a watch and we are confident you will be back for more as they will provide a high level of entertainment.
Again if you have further questions or concerns I encourage you to phone me at 435-7578 or email msmn.rec.brd@sasktel.net and I would be more than happy to discuss them with you.
