Moosomin’s Amazing History of Arena’s and Hockey

I had the opportunity over the past few years to research our Communities history with regards to Arena’s / hockey. It is truly an amazing story …over my time researching I have finally been able to put together the following story!!

In 1882 Moosomin had the first formal Outdoor Skating Rink in Western Canada

Grosvenor’s Pond ….located behind the Grosvenor Hotel

In 1884 Moosomin had the first Indoor Rink in all of Western Canada … The Victoria Rink

In 1885 Moosomin had 2 indoor rinks …the only two in Western Canada

Victoria Rink and the Orange Hall

In 1885 the first game of Ice Hockey played in Western Canada was played in Moosomin

In 1896 Moosomin built the first of it’s “BIG” Rinks …The Mammoth Rink

In 1917 the Mammoth rink collapsed due to a heaving snow load

Doe to war times Moosomin had no indoor rinks from 1918 to 1926

In 1926 Moosomin opened the Memorial Rink. The rink last opened in 1977

In 1978 Moosomin opened the Communiplex

In 1999 Moosomin Communiplex was named a Municipal Heritage Site in recognition

Of the Victoria Rink being the first Rink in Western Canada

In 2020 the Communiplex was renamed the Mike Schwean Arena

In 2028 the Mike Schwean Arena will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary with a million dollar

Retrofit project planned

In 2028 Moosomin will party like it is 1885 as the community will open it’s second

Indoor arena on the old site of the Federated COOP

Quite a fantastic story as Moosomin lays claims to the first formal outdoor rink in Western Canada ….the first two indoor rinks in Western Canada and the first game of Ice Hockey played in Saskatchewan!!

Damage at PM Golf World

To those who chose to by-pass our $1,000 driving mats and hit golf balls off the grass at the Football Field …well …you take a great picture!! Do it twice and you won’t have to worry about a third time as your time at Bradley Park ( rink , ball golf …everything ) will be exhausted.

Finishing touches are going into place to finish off PM Golf Park!! New furnishings , garbage containors have arrived and a large 14 X 24 Gazebo will be built over the cement pad to provide summer shade from the heat!!

For those not aware the are includes a large putting green , a greenside bunker , 2 Adult Driving Nets and 1 Jr Net….and best of all the area is lit to allow extended use in Spring and Fall. The facility is located at Bradley Park and is available for public use at no cost. We even supply golf clubs for those without any in our lending shed ….you just need to bring a few golf balls!!

Bradley Park – Legacy Field(s)

Work is well under way as Legacy Field is transformed into Legacy Fields!! First and foremost our biggest thankyou’s to Bob and Rose Mullett for covering the lions share of the expenses for this project.

What the project consists of is making the diamond a little smaller which enable us to add 3 much needed Youth soccer fields on the south end …when completed we will have one beautiful diamond usable by all age groups along with the 3 new soccer fields!!

Project includes ….

All new infield …completely shaled
New Dugouts
New Sound System
New fencing around ball field ( existing fencing on south end remains )

When complete this premium facility will be a beauty and will serve a ton of users starting in 2027!!

Bradley Park – 2026 Summer Projects

Legacy Field is an amazing project …but there has also been a ton of other projects completed ( or near completion ) at Bradley Park in 2026.

This list includes:

Legacy Field – Baseball / Softball and Soccer Fields
PM Park – Golf World
West Point – Best Friends Dog Park
Completion of Outdoor Pickleball Courts / lighting
Addition of 4 new bridges ….” Bridges at Bradley Park”
Completion of Sports Lending Shed
Additional paving on our main parking lot
Main Soccer Field now completely irrigated
New Dugouts arriving in time for 2027 at COOP Field
Dugouts placed on Sharpe’s Field and Pharmasave Field

Bradley Park – Sports Lending Shed

Just a reminder to everyone about all the venues available to citizens at Bradley Park:

Golf World / Driving Nets / Putting Green / Sand Bunker

Horseshoes

Pickleball

Disc Golf

Basketball

Beach Volleyball

All required equipment can be found in our lending shed at no cost. Simply use the equipment and return it as you found it when you are finished!!

Used Sports Equipment Community Donations

Moosomin Parks and Recreation would like to extend a request to the community for donations towards the Sports Library Building. Maybe you have an old ball glove, an old set of golf clubs ….a kid’s bike…whatever!!

Keep in mind all this equipment is available to both in town and out of town residents. As such we would also be excited for out-of-town donations to the inventory.

Parks and Rec would be more than happy to pick up any donations both in and out of town.

Tourist Information Booth !!

With the project now very tangible we look to the community for ideas for the booth as well as volunteer help. If anyone has ideas and would like to make this project “special” please let us know at the Rec Office as we would be excited to hear and discuss!!

Cost includes: $ 50.00 per 1 hour

$ 75.00 for 2 hours

$100.00 for 3 hours

In addition, we have a $25.00 cancellation fee

We have lots of bookings so please call well in advance to try to find a spot.

2026/27 Wedding Early Birds

For those looking to book weddings in 2027 or 2028 please take note if booked in the 2026 calendar year we will hold the 2026 pricing. That can become a significant savings!! As well we do sign contracts but do not require a down payment as billings are made at month end after your event!!

Mike Schwean Arena – Winter of 2026/2027

We have a planned opening date of Friday, October 9th. For those looking for earlier ice I believe both Whitewood and Ochapowace already have their ice in for the season.

We have begun the scheduling process for the Arena for the winter of 2026/2027. Minor Hockey , Moosomin Skating Club , Sr Rangers and Rec Hockey have already booked in multiple dates. Borderland COOP Aquaplex - Closed for the Season

Our swimming Pool is now closed for the 2026 season …on behalf of Parks and Recreation we thank all our patrons for the past summer as well as our staff who did a great job!!

We are excited to announce both Ava ( Metzger ) and Chloe ( Szafron ) will be back to Manage and Assistant Manage in 2027 so we know it will be another great year!!
