Moosomin Labyrinth

Moosomin is a small town located in southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada, known for its friendly community and picturesque rural landscape. The Moosomin Labyrinth opened June 12, 2021. it is meant to be used for prayer and meditation. (Patterned after the path of the Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth (Chartres, France) a large, intricate maze on the cathedral floor, likely created around 1201-1205.)
Labyrinths date back over 4000 years and were used by ancient cultures. These ancient symbols have served in many religious traditions as universal prayer and meditation tools for thousands of years. Often confused with a maze, labyrinths consist of a circular back and forth path that leads to a centre, with no dead ends, no switch backs. There is only one entrance and one exit. The only choice is whether or not to enter.

The vision of the labyrinth was to establish a tranquil environment, but it has become quite meaningful to residents. The Moosomin Labyrinth opened June 12, 2021, and was originally proposed and created by Carol Adair and Rev. Carolyn Woodall. Each year brings new additions to the labyrinth. In 2023, 10 trees were planted around the labyrinth in memory of a loved one.
Out labyrinth offers a very special unique experience that you may not find in other communities. The walk can be, and is, personal. It is different for everyone. It can be whatever you want it to be. It can be a spiritual walk, mindfulness walk, memory walk, nature walk and more. The Labyrinth lets you take time to reflect. and is a great stress reliever. We don’t understand how or why it works but it does.

Our Labyrinth has already been used lots especially In teaching students mindfulness. It has been used for Truth and Reconciliation where Joy Flaman had a healing ceremony with smudging. Students participated by wearing orange shirts and painting orange rocks. A great way to get the community involved, green up the space, and make it more personal.
Each step opens up a sense of where the sacred really is. The labyrinth means something different for everyone: so take that step and find out what it means to you.
